| RFM Gets First HALAL Certified Meat Plant in RP |

Food and beverage firm RFM Corporation announced yesterday that it has secured accreditation as the first and only halal-certified meat processing plant in the country, paving the way for supplying its Swift meat products such as hotdogs or frankfurters and sausages to the Muslim consumer market, estimated at over 1.9 billion Muslims around the world.
In a disclosure, RFM President and CEO Jose A. Concepcion III said the RFM meat plant in Cabuyao, Laguna has been awarded halal certification by the Islamic Da’Wah Council of the Philippines (IDCP), the only halal certifying body in the country recognized by the World Halal Council.
‘Halal’ is an Arabic term meaning “permissible”. In food, it means those products that do not contain any prohibited substance, and have been prepared and processed in accordance with strict standards for purity, nutrition and quality.
“It is estimated that over 70 per cent of Muslims worldwide strictly follow halal food standards, and the global halal food market is currently a US$560-billion industry. Even non-Muslims look for the halal seal and consider halal certification as a higher level of quality assurance,” Concepcion said.
In addition, RFM vice president for exports Imelda J. Madarang said that the company’s halal certification is supported with the HACCP and “AAA” accreditation also secured by RFM for its meat plant, which are requirements before being allowed to export.
“HACCP or Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point is a system that identifies, evaluates and controls biological, chemical and physical hazards significant to ensuring safety in food products. On the other hand, the triple A rating is a certification awarded after audit of plant facilities by the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS),” she explained.
The HACCP and “AAA” accreditation allows RFM to sell its meat products both in local and overseas markets. Its meat plant is operated in Cabuyao, Laguna under its subsidiary, Cabuyao Meat Processing Corporation.
RFM is currently celebrating its 50th year as a producer of a wide range of food and beverage products, including chilled meat products under the Swift brand, such as Mighty Meaty hotdogs, Sweet and Juicy hotdogs, Chicken frankfurters, SAM brown hotdogs, Delicious bacons, and a variety of Christmas hams, as well as canned meat products such as Swift Juicy corned beef, Meaty corned beef, Vienna sausage, luncheon meat and meat loaf. |
